After multiple episodes of suspense, schemes and sabotage, Celebrity Traitors has reached a nail-biting finale
Warning: spoilers ahead - This piece discloses details from Celebrity Traitors finale
Throughout the season, audiences saw eliminations, betrayals, serious side-eye, and an unforgettable incident that pierced the overwhelming suspense.
Yet on the final evening, the final winner of the inaugural celebrity edition was revealed.
Out of nineteen participants, just a handful remained: Traitors and faithfuls competing for the winnings.
Before long, the field narrowed to only three contenders: the final players.
In the end, funny man Alan Carr emerged as the winner, in a shocking result that broke the internet and left him emotional.
"It's been tearing me apart, my apologies," he exclaimed, revealing to the remaining faithfuls that he'd always been one of the deceivers. "I feel terrible about this."
"You did brilliantly," they consoled him. "Everything's fine."
Social media immediately exploded with the news. "The worst deceiver being the best traitor ever," commented a viewer.
"It couldn't have been a more iconic ending," wrote another, while someone else described it as "the TV moment of the year."
His chosen charity, a cancer charity, gets to keep the entire winnings, with the total amount amounting to £87,500.
The comedian's evolution from comic relief to strategic player was among the most memorable aspects of the season.
However, his victory still shocked viewers in shock, according to entertainment reporters.
"The idea of Alan, among everyone, pulling off a masterclass in deceit felt about as likely as him maintaining a straight face through one of his own punchlines."
During follow-up conversations, fellow players summed up the reasons nobody had truly doubted him.
"He might have come down to the morning meal in traitor attire and I wouldn't have believed he was deceiving us. His humor distracted me," a player said.
"Most people didn't vote for him because how does one vote for someone who is so charming?" asked a different contestant.
The winner stated he had "thoroughly enjoyed" his experience with the show.
"I want to do it again... I don't think it would be successful a second time!"
Thursday evening's installment was lengthened to over an hour on the network. It had an unusual opening than typical episodes, as all the celebs were aware who would appear at the morning gathering.
There was some very uplifting, and very un-Traitors-esque soundtrack, as the episode revisited some moments from each of the finalists' time in the castle.
True to form, Alan Carr provided unforgettable quotes.
"Let's face it, I began the competition a bit of an anxious mess. I've thrown close allies under the bus, I've eliminated national treasures in plain sight. Apparently I'm a better liar and traitor than I believed."
At the same time, another contestant noted that reaching the conclusion was "way more stressful than playing for a national team", while someone else said he was "completely amazed" to have lasted this long.
Early on of the finale, several players seemed to be making a bid to become the fashion standout of the competition, taking over from the previously eliminated fashionable contestant.
Carr emerged at breakfast resembling a vintage television personality in patterned burgundy attire, later switching into a bejewelled white suit.
But he was outstyled by a fellow player's maroon velvet tuxedo. What a look.
Next up was the challenge, with the final players boarding a train named - naturally - The Traitors Express.
This task involved ripping up portraits of eliminated players. Have sympathy for a player who was hit on the head multiple times by the cover of a heavy wooden box.
Soon after, the moment arrived for the roundtable.
The deceivers did a pinky promise beforehand, vowing to support each other. "We've come a long way, I won't throw him under a bus," stated one, while their partner simply laughed.
However, one did stick to his promise. Yet, managing to stay unnoticed for the majority of the competition, the other still got the most votes.
The last deceiver appeared he was in a world of pain to be the final deceiver remaining. "Now I'm on my own, I'm frightened," he said. "I'm a loose cannon, without direction."
Social media and viewers were similarly upset.
"I did NOT want that player to be banished. A truly loveable traitor," commented an observer.
"You will forever be remembered in Traitors history," wrote another user.
But there was little opportunity to dwell on this departure. Before long, the game reached the endgame - this being what we were really all here for.
The final four stood over the fire pit. Meanwhile, the partnership broke down, just when it was most crucial, in a truly WTF moment.
One contestant was eliminated in dramatic fashion - following a surprising decision from their ally, who betrayed them.
"It hurts to be stabbed in the back last minute in that manner," said the ousted contestant. Subsequently, we learned that when they message, the betrayed player calls the other as a traitor.
Finally, just three players remained in the game: the last participants.
One player, appearing quite pleased, voted to end the competition. The same decision was made by a different player, and everything depended on the third, who made the identical choice - resulting in the traitor was the winner.
According to commentators, the moment where remaining contestants consoled the champion was "compelling television". "I anticipate it could be in the running for outstanding scene at television honors," they said.
Fortunately, the champion soon recovered from his bout of tears, and could finally appreciate the moment.
"What a rollercoaster. I thought I was terrible at deception, my expressions gave me away and here I am the champion," the winner said.
And he even made light of that infamous murder - his best friend during the initial stages - by leaning toward the presenter in the concluding moments and touching her cheek.
"There's something on your face," he said, with his characteristic laugh.
The last few weeks of famous people scheming, scheming and sometimes unexpected moments may seem like a bizarre fantasy. Yet it actually occur. It will be remembered fondly.
