American Armed Forces Conducts Lethal Attack in Pacific, Resulting in Four Fatalities
As stated by a senior military official, the US armed forces carried out a lethal strike on a vessel in the eastern Pacific, resulting in the deaths of four individuals.
“A US joint task force carried out a deadly attack on a craft linked to a Designated Terrorist Organization in open sea. Surveillance confirmed the vessel was traveling along a established narco-trafficking route and was engaged in illicit drug transport. All four male narco-terrorists were killed, and no US military forces were injured.”
Context and Recent Actions
This announcement follows a day after an announcement regarding a blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers to and from Venezuela. That statement on social media, the American leader alleged Venezuela of using oil profits to fund drug trafficking and criminal activities, vowing to increase the military presence.
Only on the previous day, the Pentagon said it had conducted strikes on three boats it accused of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, killing eight people. Since 2 September, more than 20 strikes have killed at least 99 people, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.
Administration Defends Tactics Amid Scrutiny
The administration has faced increasing demands to release video of a September 2nd vessel attack. However, officials have refused to do so. The administration has supported its efforts as a successful operation, arguing it has stopped drugs from entering US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is stretching the limits of lawful warfare.
Although the administration has said the operation is about halting drugs headed to the US, remarks from a top official appeared to suggest a wider geopolitical aim. In a recent interview, the senior advisor remarked the leader “wants to keep on destroying vessels until Venezuela's president cries uncle.”
This indicates the military campaign may be linked to a push to remove Venezuela's current leadership.
