No less than 64 civilians lost their lives in a law enforcement action targeting the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the largest and deadliest raid in the region's history.

Four security agents lost their lives during Operation Containment in the communities of Alemão and Penha, government representatives stated. Over 80 people were detained.

Intense confrontations commenced when approximately 2,500 police forces initiated the operation on Tuesday morning. The Red Command reacted using armed resistance, setting fire to barriers and dropping bombs from drones, police representatives confirmed.

The UN Human Rights Office expressed being "shocked" by the security action, urging "immediate and thorough inquiries".

Operation Impact

The area of favelas close to the city's international airport is seen as the central command of a major illegal networks.

State officials stated at least 50 of those killed were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".
