Edwards and O'Neil are two of the initial candidates under consideration to succeed the former manager as manager of Wolves.
The previous coach was dismissed on Sunday after the team's 10-match without a victory beginning to the top-flight season.
And Edwards and O'Neil - each of whom have historic associations to the team - are among the names to be considered by the club leadership.
Edwards is currently at another club, which would pose a possible obstacle to his appointment at Molineux.
However the ex- Luton manager - who made over a century of games for the club during his playing career - is considered a strong contender for the vacancy.
The mid-career manager is said to have backing from the club board as they begin the process of hiring a new head coach.
Gary O'Neil is additionally appearing as a surprise contender, even though he would be a shock appointment considering he was released by Wolves in December last year.
The ex- West Ham United midfielder is currently unemployed meaning the club would not be required to pay any compensation.
