His death occurred at his home, in the company of his family.

Born in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, in 1931, Burton became one of the industry’s most admired broadcasters, bringing the wonder of classical music to the general public.

He served as the BBC’s head of music and arts during the 1960s and 1970s, winning awards for programmes such as The Golden Ring.

He also initiated the Young Musician of the Year competition in 1978, a showcase that spotlighted soloists such as violinist Nicola Benedetti.
