Eurovision Was Traditionally a Lighthearted Spectacle – Yet It Has Evolved Into a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.
An new initialism surfaced a few months following the onset of the military campaign against Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it signifies “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This designation is found only in Gaza, per insights from medical experts like paediatricians. Normally, it is unusual for physicians to attend to a young patient who has been bereaved of their complete family. However, there has been no semblance of normality concerning the genocide in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been eradicated and the number of children who have lost limbs surpasses that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal about many doctors returning from a landscape of rubble with reports of children being deliberately targeted.
An Unimaginable Crisis In Spite Of a Supposed Ceasefire
Gaza remains hell on earth. Essential medical supplies are failing to reach those in need, and major human rights organizations contend that atrocities are continuing. The Israeli government rejects these allegations, consistent with how it denies each claim it is accused of. But while traumatised orphans are now freezing in temporary shelters, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from continuing with its stated mission of “unity and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to offer a welcoming platform for Israel, even though a number of European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Because this, apparently, is what global togetherness looks like.
Historically, Eurovision banned Russia from competing in 2022 because of the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza is entirely distinct.
A Double Standard
Disregard the reality that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what seems to have been an attempt to politicise Eurovision. Set aside the news that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Forget the fact that aggression from Israeli settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that global media are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. None of this, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.
The Show Goes On Against a Backdrop of Profound Human Cost
The contest turns 70 next year – almost double the average life expectancy of an individual in Gaza now. The broadcast will air, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the whimsical pleasure it was formerly known for. An institution that initially championed togetherness has transformed into a cynical way to whitewash war.
