Jennifer Lawrence Says Discussing Donald Trump Would ‘Intensify Divisions’ That’s Ripping the Nation Apart
Jennifer Lawrence has declared that she no longer feels fitting to voice opinions countering the Trump administration, worried it could intensify polarizing arguments and increase separation throughout the country.
‘I Don’t Really Know If I Should’, Notes the Actress
In a recent interview, Lawrence reflected, “When Trump was first in office, I thought I was running around in a panicked state. But as we’ve learned, election after election, public figures fail to influence in any way on voter decisions.”
The actor went on, “So then what am I doing? I’m just expressing personal views on a matter that’s going to add fuel to a fire that’s ripping the nation apart.”
Shifting Views
Jennifer Lawrence has admitted freely about voting for both right and leftwing contenders over the years. Growing up with conservative Republicans in her home state, she cast her ballot for the Republican nominee in 2008 then moving to the Democratic party and stating she understood during the Obama era that voting Republican was undermining her own rights as a female citizen.
Past Statements
Several years ago, she stated that Donald Trump’s election might signal “the end of the world” and endorsed Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential race. More recently, she lent her support to Kamala Harris, “as I feel she’s an amazing candidate and I know that she will take all necessary steps to protect abortion access.”
Industry Position
Lawrence was aligned with most of Hollywood in her disapproval of Donald Trump as a returning figure, but the lack of leverage public figures have over the voting intentions was highlighted by Trump’s victory.
“The second term seems distinct,” commented Lawrence of his leadership. “Since he stated his intentions. We were aware of his actions for the previous administration. He was very clear. And that’s what we chose.”
Current Projects
The actor is currently promoting Die, My Love, director Lynne Ramsay’s project in which she stars as a recent parent who faces challenges with her emotional state in a remote area. During a press conference for the movie in the film festival, the star addressed the conflict in Gaza: “It’s frightening. It’s horrifying. What’s happening is nothing short of a genocide and it’s awful.”
Broader Concerns
She continued by saying that she was saddened by “the hostility in the discussions of American politics at present and how that is going to be accepted to the kids now. It’s going to be typical to them that politicians lie.”
Lawrence attempted to refocus outrage about the situation to decision-makers rather than celebrities. “Concentrate on those accountable,” she said, seen by observers as a nod to the then-recent pledge endorsed by numerous entertainment industry figures to avoid certain cultural organizations.
Personal Connections
Lawrence, who earned critical acclaim at a young age for her part in Silver Linings Playbook, is receiving praise for her portrayal in her latest project. While the director has denied the narrative being understood as one of maternal mental health issues and psychosis, the actress revealed that she connected with elements of her film narrative after the arrival of her new baby, not long after production wrapped.
“It was fear regarding my baby,” she explained, “envisioning every negative outcome, and then questioning everything that I was trying. I was seeing a therapist, but I got on a medication called that medicine and I continued it for a short period and it was effective.”
Professional Experiences
Lawrence also spoke regarding the empowering aspect of completing nude scenes in the project while she was in pregnancy and limited physically.
“There’s a freedom,” she said, about having to cast off vanity. “I mean, I sometimes think where I’m like, How exactly do I differ between my work and that profession? But it doesn’t trouble me deeply.”
