Liverpool's Manager Offers No Excuses and Pledges to Find Route Out of Malaise
Liverpool's head coach stated he had to “look at myself” after Liverpool suffered a sixth loss in 7 English top-flight games on their own turf against Nottingham Forest and insisted he would find a way from the title holders' poor run.
Nottingham Forest, fighting against the drop before kick off, delivered the biggest win at Anfield in their history as Liverpool slipped to an 8th loss in eleven matches in all competitions. The British record signing, the Swedish striker, was once more unnoticeable and the home side argued the defender's first goal should have been ruled out for similar reasons to the captain's chalked-off goal against City prior to the international break. But Slot admitted the responsibility rested with him and offered no alibis.
“No one wishes to listen to me now talking about refereeing decisions if you are defeated 3-0 in your own stadium to Forest,” stated the Reds' boss. “I should look at my own role first and my squad, but it demonstrates you how a score can change the momentum of a match. Earlier I was just hoping for us to net a strike. Afterwards we barely generated anything.
“Of course there is a way out, especially with the quality footballers we have. Regardless if you triumph or are beaten when you look back you are always thinking: ‘In which areas can we do better, in what aspects can we make changes?’ but that is something else from questioning yourself.
“I wish to stress I am accountable for the current defeats. You are answerable when you are winning but also liable when you are defeated. I can not provide enough excuses for us to have the results we have. That is far from good enough and I am responsible for that.”
Liverpool’s display fell apart as the coach introduced multiple offensive substitutions when chasing the match. “It was the same on the road at Nottingham Forest the previous campaign,” he said. “I took Ibou [Ibrahima Konaté] out and brought on [Diogo] Jota and he scored straight away to equalize at 1-1. Then it was courageous, now it’s probably stupid.”
The Anfield side previously were defeated in two successive at Anfield league fixtures against Nottingham Forest in the sixties. The most recent occasion they suffered back-to-back league matches by a three-goal scoreline was in the mid-60s.
Slot commented: “It was extremely poor. Competing on home soil, losing 3-0 no matter which team you encounter is a very, very bad result. Unexpected if you look at the first half-hour of the game. I haven’t seen us producing so much in the opening 30 minutes perhaps the whole campaign, and the initial occasion they entered in our penalty area they found the back of the net.
“It did not happen against Manchester City, but in all other game we have been the dominant side and were capable to create chances. Recently it is nearly consistently that we fail to convert our chances and the ones we concede go in.”
