Research Shows UK Government Officials Met Fossil Fuel Industry Representatives In 500 Sessions During First Year of Office

According to new research, government ministers held discussions with representatives from the petroleum industry over 500 times in their first year in government – amounting to twice every business day.

Notable Rise Compared to Former Government

The analysis showed that fossil fuel lobbyists were present at 48% extra official discussions in the current government's first year compared to the year before.

Official Response

Officials justified the engagements, asserting that officials held meetings with a diverse array of representatives from "energy sector, worker groups and community groups to drive forward our sustainable energy major project".

Rising Worries About Sector Pressure

However, the results have generated worry among observers about the extent of the fossil fuel industry's leverage over officials at a moment when ministers are working to lower bills and move to a more sustainable power framework.

Principal Results

The research, which draws from the government's public documentation of government discussions, additionally revealed:

  • Ministers at the Energy and Climate Department engaged with petroleum sector advocates 274 times, with corporate delegates attending approximately one-fourth of meetings.

  • The climate official engaged with petroleum sector advocates 250 times – with one-third of every engagement attended by sector representatives.

  • Throughout the equivalent duration government representatives met with trade union representatives 61 times.

  • Three major fossil fuel companies met with representatives 100 times collectively.

  • Oil industry representatives attended the majority of official session about the excess profits charge, a short-term levy against the "extraordinary profits" of offshore petroleum firms.

Political Reactions

A Green party MP remarked: "Rather than heeding experts, residents suffering from flooding, or families anxious to secure a protected environment for their future generations, this administration is emphasizing corporate representatives and revenues for major petroleum companies."

Official Denial

The government insisted the discoveries were "inaccurate", stating numerous of the corporations listed also had sustainable power initiatives and that such matters were typically the primary subject of the meetings.

"Our main focus is a just, systematic and thriving transition in the offshore region in compliance with our climate and regulatory obligations, and we are working with the industry to protect current and future generations of quality employment."

Broader Context

Multiple prominent oil and gas companies have been condemned for reducing their environmental funding in recent years amid a worldwide opposition against climate action.

A campaigns manager from an ecological advocacy project stated: "Ministers vowed a people-focused leadership, but that doesn't mean yielding to companies making money out of ecological disaster. It's necessary to stop cosying up to climate-damaging entities and put people first."
