Senegal's Rising Star Lamine Camara: From Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.
When I enter the room, the young midfielder grabs a football he clings to throughout our chat. This serves as a simple symbol for a ambition he has never let slip. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks the AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His resolve and natural ability won over teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the hardest person to convince didn't come from a sporting director or manager, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me playing soccer but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.
Overcoming Initial Obstacles
In time, on “one beautiful day,” he received his father’s blessing to chase his path in the sport. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a contract.
Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the club that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After Camara was named the best player in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “shocked” to discover he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “They took me straight to the academy. They prevented me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said.
A Landmark Year and Continental Arrival
That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his nation to the title and being named player of the tournament.
A month later, he was unveiled as Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” states the youngster. He resides by himself in Europe, a choice his family support to keep him focused.
Inspiration and On-Field Identity
Off-field noise are not really a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and exceptional skills. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and accuracy from dead-ball situations are notable assets. Camara confesses a need to control his competitive fire, having been shown red early in his spells at each French club. “It is a habit that is following me!” he jokes.
Monaco, Teammates and Future Ambitions
At Monaco, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” Camara noted.
Currently, his focus is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. After defeating England on their soil…,” he states, pointing to a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.
Regarding a transfer to the English top flight, he remains committed to Monaco at present. “I am very at ease here,” he affirms. However, he's often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the senior Africa Player of the Year in the future.
“We are the favourites – that's the reality. Having beaten England at Wembley… it gives you confidence.”
Looking ahead, Lamine Camara blends humble beginnings, steely determination, and grand ambitions targeting to lead Senegal to continental glory and build his own lasting legacy in the game.
