The Devastating Transformation a Single Year Has Brought in America

Twelve months back, the landscape was utterly separate. Before the American presidential vote, thoughtful residents could recognize America's significant faults – its injustices and imbalance – but they still could see it as the US. A democratic nation. A land where constitutional order held significance. A country led by a dignified and decent leader, notwithstanding his older age and declining health.

These days, this autumn, many of us hardly identify the nation we live in. Persons believed to be undocumented migrants are rounded up and pushed into vans, occasionally blocked from fair treatment. The East Wing of the White House – is being torn down for a grotesque ballroom. The leader is persecuting his opponents or perceived antagonists and requesting the justice department transfer a huge total of taxpayer money. Soldiers with weapons are deployed into American cities with deceptive justifications. The military command, renamed the Department of War, has effectively rid itself of regular press examination while it uses possibly reaching nearly $1tn in public funds. Universities, attorney offices, media outlets are submitting due to presidential intimidation, and billionaires are regarded as members of the royal family.

“America, just months before its 250-year mark as the globe's top democratic nation, has fallen over the brink into autocracy and totalitarianism,” a noted author, commented this past summer. “In the end, swifter than I imagined possible, it transpired in America.”

Every morning starts amid recent atrocities. And it is challenging to understand – and agonizing to acknowledge – just how far gone we are, and how quickly it has happened.

Nevertheless, it is known that the leader was properly voted in. Following his highly troubling previous administration and following the cautions that came with the knowledge of the rightwing blueprint – following the president personally declared plainly he planned to act as an autocrat solely at the start – sufficient voters elected him over Kamala Harris.

While alarming as today's circumstances may be, it's more daunting to recognize that we are just nine months into this administration. How will an additional three years of this deterioration position us? And what if the three years transforms into a more extended duration, since there is nobody to restrain this ruler from determining that another term is necessary, possibly for security concerns?

Granted, there is still hope. There are midterm elections in 2026 which might bring a different balance of power, in case Democrats retake either chamber of the legislature. We have elected officials who are attempting to impose some accountability, such as Democratic congressmen that are initiating an inquiry regarding the effort to money grab from the justice department.

And a leadership election three years from now could begin our journey toward restoration exactly as last year’s election set us on this regrettable path.

There exist millions of Americans protesting in urban areas throughout communities, like they performed last weekend at democracy demonstrations.

Robert Reich, commented this week that “the dormant powerhouse of the US is stirring”, exactly as before after the Communist witch-hunt era in that decade or during anti-war demonstrations or in the Watergate scandal.

On those occasions, the tilting vessel eventually was righted.

Reich says he recognizes the signals of that awakening and observes it occurring currently. As support, he references the widespread marches, the widespread, bipartisan pushback against a broadcaster's firing and the near-unanimous defiance by media to accept military mandates they report only authorized information.

“The sleeping giant perpetually exists asleep until some venality grows too toxic, an specific act so contemptuous of the common good, some brutality so disruptive, that he has no choice but to awaken.”

It's a positive outlook, and I value his knowledgeable stance. Perhaps he will prove to be right.

At the same time, the crucial issues endure: can America return to normalcy? Can it reclaim its standing globally and its adherence to constitutional order?

Or do we need to admit that the historical project worked for a while, and then – abruptly, completely – collapsed?

My negative thoughts tells me that the second option is correct; that everything might be lost. My positive feelings, though, tells me that we need to strive, in whatever ways we can.

In my case, working in journalism analysis, that means encouraging reporters to commit, more fully, to their purpose of holding power to account. For others, it could mean participating in election efforts, or organizing rallies, or finding ways to safeguard electoral access.

Not even one year prior, we existed in a separate situation. In the future? Or after another term? The reality is, we cannot predict. All we can do is to strive to not give up.
