The Japanese Economy Declines as Exports Suffer by US Tariffs
The Japanese economic system has experienced a decline for the first time in six quarters, mainly driven by falling overseas shipments due to recent US trade duties.
G7 Economic Standings
Japan stands as the first G7 nation to announce an GDP decline in the previous three-month period.
As the United States yet to publish its gross domestic product figures for Q3 2025, the present Group of Seven economic leaderboard display:
- The French economy: 0.5 percent quarterly growth
- United Kingdom: +0.1%
- Canadian economy: 0.1 percent (preliminary figure)
- German economy: zero growth
- Italy: no growth
- Japan: -0.4%
Travel Stocks Slump amid Diplomatic Dispute with Beijing
In addition to the economic contraction, Japan is experiencing an intensifying political dispute with China concerning Taiwan.
Shares in Japanese tourism and consumer businesses have dropped significantly after China recommended its citizens to avoid traveling to Japan.
This move by Beijing intensified a diplomatic feud that was sparked by remarks from Japan's new PM about the possibility of deploying troops in the event of a hypothetical Chinese attack on Taiwan.
The situation led to a wave of sell-offs across Japan's leisure shares.
- The Tokyo Disneyland operator shares fell by 5.7 percent
- The department store chain tumbled by 11.3 percent
- The national carrier declined by 3.75 percent
"The China-Japan dispute over Taiwan and China's travel warning discouraging visits to Japan introduces short-term challenges for retail and hospitality sectors.
"Chinese visitors represent roughly 25% of Japan's international visitors, making retail outlets, high-end shopping, and tourism services especially at risk."
GDP Decline Details
Japanese GDP fell by 0.4 percent in the third quarter, as industrial overseas shipments were impacted by tariffs imposed by the United States this year.
Exports were a key factor of the decline, falling by 1.2% compared with the April-June quarter, and were 4.5% lower than a the same period last year.
Earlier this year, the American government had proposed Japan with a additional 25% tariff on its goods, which was later reduced to 15% when the two countries concluded a trade deal.
Private demand also declined, by 0.3 percent compared to the previous quarter.
On an annual basis, Japan's real gross domestic product shrank by 1.8 percent in the quarter through September.
"Japan's economy was stable in the first half of this year and the latest GDP figures showed that momentum is halted temporarily.
I expect Japan's economy to be back on a gradual growth trend going forward."
The US administration has recently acknowledged the impact of tariffs on Americans, reducing duties on imported food products including meat, tomatoes, coffee and bananas amid growing concerns about rising costs.
