During the bulk of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped inside a mental fortress built from the memories of Henry Creel. The search for an escape route in episode 6 leads them to witness again a traumatic incident from Henry's early years—a moment that could contain the secret to his downfall once and for all.

A Journey Into the Cavern

Upon meeting Max in the psychic realm known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is sheltering in a grotto that Henry is terrified of. An accidental discovery a viewing device pilfered from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the danger lies outside of the cave. By aligning her view with the shape, she and Max tumble into a abandoned tunnel.

They watch a child version of Henry come across an wounded, fearful individual. When Henry tries to help, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly questions through tears. It was a factor, but the trauma involved more than a defensive killing.

Similar to other plot points in volume 2, the truth about the mine shaft incident is detailed in the theatrical production The First Shadow.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Secret Science

The play reveals the 1943 event, which reportedly teleported a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension dubbed the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an altered blood type.

That survivor's offspring, a young Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in the Nevada desert. However, a treacherous employee pilfered lab samples to hand over to the Soviets, who were eager to begin their own interdimensional projects. The man in the mine shaft is that employee.

Unlocking the Mystery

Based on what is known about Brenner's work, the case would assuredly have some of the altered blood. In the scene, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon opening the case, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—powers he would later pass on to the children Brenner would experiment on.

Another possibility, the container could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to the secret facility, where it maintains the stability of the Upside Down. The stage play explains that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, reappearing hours later as a different person. As a youth, he struggles with the whispers of a dark entity, much like how Will Byers was influenced by the entity in season 2.

A Weaponized Emotion

Henry's enduring terror linked to that memory demonstrates how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. While he orchestrates the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him lingers. The villain weaponizes terror, and the narrative points to a climactic battle between Vecna and Will, who has overcome his personal demons to fortify himself.

Will's growth has taken a weapon from Vecna. More importantly, Will now is aware of what his enemy truly fears, which could provide a critical advantage in the series finale ahead.
