The Two Fatalities Identified in Brown University Incident as Authorities Persist in Hunt for Gunman.

Two students who died in the recent mass shooting on the university campus had tributes paid to them on Monday – amid a widespread hunt for their assailant persisted following the release by Rhode Island officials of the sole person detained in connection in the case.

Honoring a Lost Student

Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was called “an amazing, stable, pious, radiant soul”, per the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which paid tribute to her at a gathering on Sunday.

Her role included second-in-command of Brown’s branch of the College Republicans organization, the group said. The White House press secretary also expressed sympathies publicly, stating: “It's indescribable. Keeping in mind her kin and peers, especially her parents.”

MukhammadAziz Umurzokov

The second fatality was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his initial year at the renowned school, family members said.

Umurzokov’s identity was confirmed by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.

“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. He had big dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon and assisting patients,” his sibling Samira said in a tribute.

The Shooting Incident

Nine other people were injured in the weekend shooting in the school of engineering of Brown’s university in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.

Authorities said late Sunday that a 24-year-man arrested in a search at a hotel about around 27 kilometers from the campus earlier in the day was being released.

“A perpetrator remains free,” stated Peter Neronha, Peter Neronha.

He added, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you have to regroup and go in another, and this is precisely what occurred over the last 24 hours or so.”

Public Fear

Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “It is expected to provoke renewed concern for our city”.

The gunman began shooting inside a lecture hall in the engineering facility on Saturday, firing more than 40 rounds from a 9mm pistol, a police source told the Associated Press.

Law enforcement that raided the hotel found a pair of pistols and magazines when the individual was taken into custody, as was reported.

Those Hurt

Among those wounded, one student was discharged from care, said Christina Paxson, Christina Paxson. Seven more were in serious yet stable state, and one remained in critical care, police said on Sunday.

A private school, a private K-12 school in Durham, North Carolina, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.

More Condolences

Tributes were paid to Cook at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only in her youth... but at Brown she was a shining example in that institution as well.”

A group leader, Martin Bertao, released remarks from the group. “She was famed for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she served her chapter and peers,” he said.

The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by Umurzokov’s death in a statement. “We offer our heartfelt sympathies to his relatives, companions, and schoolmates and lament the passing of his potential.”

Wider Picture

The weekend's murders at Brown, the country's seventh most historic university with about 7,300 undergraduate and 3,000 graduate students, happened during one of at least 392 mass shootings reported in the US so far in 2025, according to records. Monday was the 349th day of the year.
