TikTok Provides The Community Authority to Reduce Artificial Intelligence-Made Content in Their Feeds

TikTok is introducing a fresh option that enables them to lessen the volume of AI-made videos appearing in their streams. This step comes as the service revealed that it currently hosts in excess of 1 billion AI-generated clips.

Pilot Phase and Launch

This change is undergoing trials over the following weeks before a full-scale launch. This advancement coincides with a increase in content created by AI, spurred by new video-generation tools.

The Broader AI Trend

Studies have shown that approximately one in 10 of the most rapidly expanding content creators on a popular video site exclusively feature clips produced artificially. A significant portion of this output is classified as “AI slop”, a label for substandard, bulk-generated content that is often nonsensical or dreamlike.

“We know from our community that many people appreciate content produced via AI tools, ranging from computer-generated images to informative clips, and we want to give people the ability to adjust the amount of that, based on their own likes,” said a company executive.

Scale of AI Content

TikTok shared that there are now over a billion videos on its app identified as artificially created. Collectively, over 100 million videos are uploaded to the platform every day, making AI content a minor percentage of its overall inventory.

User Control Features

Viewers will be able to decrease or raise the amount of artificial media they watch by accessing the topic control feature in the app and choosing the AI content topic. Other topics that are already be controlled under the filter include politics, fashion, beauty, and choreography.

Platform Guidelines

The platform’s policies mandate content makers to tag “realistic” AI-made content, and it prohibits dangerous deepfakes of celebrities or crisis events. Any believable AI-generated clip that is without a tag can be taken down under its community policies.

Additionally, the platform will now attach an AI-generated watermark to content made using its own AI tools, or identified by an industry-wide initiative for spotting content made by AI. This measure is aimed to stop users from seeking to bypass the labeling process.

Educational Initiatives

The platform is furthermore introducing a two million dollar educational fund for professionals and organizations to create informative material about responsible artificial intelligence. This program will benefit educational bodies focused on training programming and robotics.

Moderation Strategy

TikTok has justified its content review process, amid debate over plans to make redundant hundreds of content moderators in the UK. The company is expected to reduce hundreds of positions in its content moderation team in London, with labor groups and digital protection specialists expressing worry that humans are being replaced by AI moderation.

A trust and safety lead stated that human moderation would continue to be important, but artificial intelligence can safeguard staff by removing the most distressing content before it has to be seen by people. TikTok stated a 76% decrease in disturbing and violent content handled by safety staff over the last 12 months due to intervention by its machine learning processes.

“We think that it’s essential to combine people and machines to keep the platform safe,” the executive stated. “We’ll have people as involved in the system, but we also think it’s very important to limit contact with dangerous material as swiftly, which is the area in which a significant AI assistance is proving valuable work at speed.”
