UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller Merging Silent Hill with Among Us Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several fascinating future games, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.

"This is a unique experience where a girl containing several human souls inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Within her exist four separate personas, each with unique anxieties and drives. These souls can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.

Judging by revealed footage, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, while additional clips show the protagonist navigating a abandoned chapel.

An Environment of Individual Dread

"What are you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that seem trivial to others can activate something primal within us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are unique to each person."

The central gameplay loop revolves around controlling the persona that emerges at a particular time. However, these identities will switch involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's fears become amplified and assault the protagonist in succession. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice

Initially, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with orderlies who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the waiting room have enormous blooms where their heads are. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the body belongs to them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."

Once players have deduced a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, because each soul can deceive or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The final entity standing might be a fake. Either way, your choices are irreversible."

UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
